Total distance approximately 90 km for the short tour and 130 km for the long tour. Walking takes place mainly on good walking paths, often on the so called ‘Waal paths’, ancient water systems as well as paved sections. The trail was once a cultural and trading route of the Roman Empire. This was the first true road across the Alps and was built by Emperor Claudius to connect the Adriatic Sea port Altinum with the Danube. Lovely paths with marvelous mountain panorama, dotted with magnificent vineyards and orchards. The cultural aspect is covered by many fortresses and castles along the way, the Mountain Museum by Reinhold Messner and the crowning glory at the end of the Mediterranean spa town of Meran.
